The combined interactions of the switching PAL, DUART, and 8031 microprocessor enable a terminal connected
to the DRP via an external modem, to act as the system console, or as a user terminal connected to an intelligent
asynchronous controller (IAC). This arrangement allows functions normally accessible only at a local console to
be available remotely.
3.3.2 Power-up and Initialization
Upon power-up, the ECLIPSE MV/7800 chip set is in the reset state, and is held there until the 8031
microprocessor completes the following operations:
•
Performs a self-checking sequence and checksum on its EPROM memory to ensure that it and its
memory are operational.
•
Tests control store memory.
•
Down line loads the kernel microcode and diagnostic microcode from its EPROM memory into the
SPU's control store.
•
Enters the DRP monitior and releases the host CPU from the reset state for continuous operation.
•
Determines whether the SCP should be entered or an auto-program load initiated.
The CPU continues the power-up and initialization by performing the following operations:
•
Runs diagnostics first then loads the kernel. Executes the microdiagnostics that are designed to ensure
that the system software can be loaded from the program load device. These diagnostics test the uSEQ,
CPU, and control store; the PIO/DCH controller; the MCU gate array and first 32 kilobytes of system
memory; and verify the path from memory to control store.
•
Sizes and tests all system memory.
•
Writes a control byte to the DRP indicating pass of each power-up microdiagnostic. When a

•
Starts running the SCP, "SCP-CLI>" prompt appears or enters the APL if flags were set to auto.
(Operator will usually load SCP-ADEX at this time.)
3.3.3 Extended Power-up
Power-up is extended to include testing of nonkemel items such as FPU, BMC and some CPU functions without
increasing EPROM space. After the EPROM based power-up test has passed, an SCP prompt is displayed. At
this time, the operator may load SCP-ADEX, load the system microcode, or run the operating system. When an
instruction is executed to load system microcode, diagnostic microcode is first loaded and run.
Any errors will abort this instruction and attempt to report the error to the operating system. If no errors are
found, the system microcode is loaded. There is no indication of testing except for the extended load time.
If the extended power-up completes successfully the following message will appear:
