SECTION 4
FAULT DIAGNOSIS
The purpose of this section is to support the ECLIPSE MV/7800 field maintenance strategy of locating and
replacing the field replaceable unit (FRU).
Isolation of the fault to the failing FRU is accomplished through the use of customer symptom descriptions, and
diagnostic identifications. The troubleshooting steps taken by the field engineer to locate a failing FRU are
described in this section.
Once a failing FRU is identified and replaced, a complete verification of the MV/7800 system must take place by
executing FRU diagnostics, functional tests, and system exercisers.
The objective of the field engineer is to detect, isolate, repair, and verify repair of the ECLIPSE MV/7800
computer faults within the specified field MTIR at the FRU level of remedial maintenance.
4.1 TOOLS, INFORMATION, GUIDELINES, AND BASIC PROCEDURE
4.1.1 Primary Troubleshooting Tools
Section 4 uses the following primary troubleshooting tools:
•
Power-up self-tests that run automatically when the computer is powered on or when a command to
execute the power-up self-tests is issued from the console program mode,
•
Fault monitoring that runs automatically and continuously, starting during the power-up self tests,
•
Full console program mode of the system terminal, which permits the system operator to execute various
"soft console" commands,
•
