SECTION 3
THEORY OF OPERATION
This section provides the field engineer with an overview of the theory of operation for the ECLIPSE MV/7800
computer systems. This theory of operation is provided in three parts: functional overview, system operation, and
diagnostic operation. The information is intended to acquaint the field engineer with the system operation to a
field replaceable unit (FRU) level.
The system is contained in a 16-slot chassis. Additional expansion cabinets can be added. Figure 3-1 shows the
system configuration.

The ECLIPSE MV/7800 computer is a single-board computer that provides the 32-bit processing power of the
ECLIPSE MV/ architecture. The single 15 by 15-inch system board contains the system processing unit, memory,
input/output, and diagnostic subsystems. These subsystems are interconnected by the 32-bit system bus. The
major functional subsystems are shown in Figure 3-2.
