6 Functional Description of the Ethernet Modules
The AC 800F system bus is based on the widespread Ethernet standard. Ethernet
stands for LANs to DIN ISO 8802, Part 3 (corresponding to ISO 8802-3 and
ANSI/IEEE STD 802.3). The Ethernet modules are the interfaces to the system bus.
The AC 800F is designed for accommodating up to two Ethernet modules. Contrary to
the fieldbus modules, the Ethernet modules cannot be plugged in or removed while
the AC 800F is running, i.e. under power.
• Exclusively plug the Ethernet modules in slots E1 and E2.
• Do not plug in or remove the Ethernet modules while the
AC 800F is running, i.e. under power.
The AC 800F Ethernet modules allow for adaptation to the most different transmission
media. At present, the following media are supported:

All Ethernet modules have a buffer battery holder. When the AC 800F is switched off,
the buffer battery powers the CPU sufficiently to retain the data in the CPU board
main memory and the real-time clock data. Using the battery module is only neces-
sary when no Ethernet module is plugged in slot E1 and/or E2.
Battery buffering of the CPU board PM 803F is only ensured when at
least one Ethernet module EI 811F, EI 812F or EI 813F is used.
