Cable General term for multi-wire links. In this manual there is no explicit
distinction between cables and lines. The term “cable“ is mainly used,
independent of the type of insulation.
CAN Abbreviation of Controller Area Network.
CAN bus Sensor/actuator bus developed for automotive applications. Stands out
for its high data integrity, data rates of up to 1Mbit/s, and good
electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).
CAN cable Cable used for the process station bus
CAN module FI 810F Module designed for connecting intelligent field instruments which are
equipped with a CAN interface. The module provides three CAN
interfaces and, thus, ensures compatibility with the Freelance 2000
process station.
CAN network cable Network cable for process station bus.
CAN termination
Terminating resistor; for terminating a CAN bus (100 ).
Cap Plastic cap for protecting unused connectors against static discharge.
Central unit *

A process station consists of one central unit and up to two I/O units. The
central unit contains the CPU module, which does the processing.
Cheapernet Colloquial name for Ethernet standard 10Base2.
10Base2 network cable
CMOS RAM Battery-buffered memory on the CPU board installed in the AC 800F
rack; serves for storing the current setting of the PC central unit.
COAX segment
Ethernet cable segment to which nodes are connected. Link segment

Engineering station
Coding switch Rotary switch at the upper edge of the Ethernet module board.
Contact ledge

etal ledge for putting on the connection cable shields; also provides for
cable strain relief.
CPU Acronym for Central Processing Unit. Normally this term refers to the
microprocessor providing the main functions. The AC 800F CPU board is
equipped with an Intel 80960 CPU.
CPU board The AC 800F CPU board is designed for a maximum of six modules and
one power supply module. It is the main processing unit of the AC 800F.

Current-sinking Describes the action of consuming current.
Current-sourcing Describes the action of delivering current.
