Addition of Reagents
After sample weighing (for example 0, 1 - 1, 0 g organic sample) add the required chemicals (e.g. 2 - 10
ml HNO
3
eventually with 1 - 3 ml H
2
O
2
etc.) to the sample in the vessel.
During this operation there may be foaming or spraying of samples/chemicals, e.g. caused by
carbonate decomposition.
Add the reagents drop by drop mixing the vial with a vortex system.
Follow all safety measures/precautions and wear suitable protections (glasses, gloves, lab coat),
work under fume hood, etc.
Follow the recommended Milestone application specialist.
The sample should be carefully washed off from the vessel wall. In fact sample on the vessel wall might
generate spontaneous reactions which can damage particularly the PTFE vials.
Now close the sample vessels by simply putting on the loose cover. For very reactive or unknown
samples it is recommended to use quartz or glass vials.
If using hydrofluoric acid, it is required to use PTFE vials.
After the acid addition check that the sample is well homogenized with the acids. Complete sample
homogenization can be achieved by using an eccentric mixer or by soft agitation in an ultrasonic bath.
If the sample floats on acid surface, it is recommended to use small sample weights and to follow the
recommended Milestone applications.
Verify that samples are completely wet by reagents before starting with microwave program.
Addition of chemicals (Dosing station)
Addition of base load in the main PTFE vessel
The base load is the media that guarantees a uniform heat transfer on all samples and it is placed into the
big PTFE vessel of the reactor, before to place the sample holder.
