2.5.5 Processing recursive sample tubes
During routine operations, it may be necessary to set a tube which has been already
processed back into the input sorter (for example, because of a processing error or an
additional test requirement). These samples are called recursive samples.
The processing of these recursive samples in the system is mainly dependent on the type of
barcodes being used.
All samples from one patient have the same barcode.
All samples with the same sample contents from one patient have the
same barcode (for example serum). Other samples from the same
patient with different materials (for example plasma) have a different
All samples from one patient have a different barcode, even when the
sample material is the same.
When using barcode types 2 and 3, the sorting depends on whether there are open test
requirements for the tube available:
• Pending requirements are available or the lab host computer is sending new requirements
target rack.
• No pending requirements or the host is not sending new requirements error rack.
When barcode type 1 is used, then processing is dependent on additional conditions:
• When only one tube type and only one type of material is in use, the sorting depends only
on whether pending requirements are present or not.
• If only closed sample tubes are being used in the second run through the system, then the
sorting depends only on whether requirements are pending or not.
• If multiple tube types are being used with identical contents, then there must be
substantial differences in the tube geometries. The sorting process depends only on
whether pending requirements are present or not. It is important to note here that
inaccuracies can result during the determination of volume.
• If multiple tube types are being used with different contents, then there must be
substantial differences in the tube geometries depending on the content. For example,
only when a serum tube has a substantially different geometry from a urine tube, can both
tubes be used opened. If the serum tube has the same dimensions as a coagulation tube,
for example, then problems can result with the volume determination.
NOTICE
The use of type 2 or type 3 barcodes is preferred!
