2.6. Basic information about the software
The system software including online help is installed on the integrated QNX computer and
serves to control and monitor all of the system's functions.
The system software contains programs and functions for:
• System configuration and control functions
• Data management
• Time management by the administrator
• Error messages and troubleshooting
• Creation of log files
• List printing
This chapter contains basic information explaining the structure, operating elements and
function of the software.
2.6.1 Structure of the software
The system software controls the system and is responsible for the management and further
processing of available data. It uses a graphic user interface (GUI) and runs on the operating
system QNX 4.2x.
2.6.2 QNX operating system
The operating system ensures that the system software functions safely and reliably in order
to guarantee the continuous and efficient processing of samples.
The graphic user interface of the QNX operating system has the look and feel of the
Windows® operating system. It offers flexible and simple usability of the system via a menu
structure that is convenient and easy to use via the touch screen monitor.
2.6.3 Communication with the laboratory host computer
Normally, the cobas p 512 system is connected to the host computer via a serial interface
(RS232) or via a TCP/IP network. Data can be transferred in both directions.
2.6.3.1 Dynamic interface
The data flow is controlled by the lab computer, and the existing data processing rules of the
cobas p 512 system are changed by the lab host computer.
2.6.3.2 Standard protocol
The data flow is controlled by the cobas p 512 system.
