NOTE:
9 Do not install the water pump compo-
nents when measuring the backlash.
9 Measure both the forward and reverse
gear backlashes.
9 If both the forward and reverse gear back-
lashes are larger than specification, the
pinion gear may be too high.
9 If both the forward and reverse gear back-
lashes are smaller than specification, the
pinion gear may be too low.
9 If either of these conditions exist, then
check the pinion gear shim(s) selection.
Forward gear
1. Measure:
9 Forward gear backlash
Out of specification → Adjust.
Measurement steps:
8 Position the bearing housing puller
so that it pushes against the propeller
shaft.
8 Set the lower unit upside down.
Forward gear backlash:
0.20 ~ 1.15 mm (0.008 ~ 0.045 in)
