plane Designates one or more of the rotating elements of a piece of equipment that is to
be balanced. Each plane lies perpendicular to the line that defines the axis of
rotation.
predictive
maintenance
Technology of periodically monitoring the actual condition of equipment to
discover faults, to determine probable time of breakdown, and to provide scheduled
downtime for repair that avoids excess cost and lost production.
primary effect Effect of balance weight on nearest support bearing.
real-time Continuously updated data or plot, such as an FFT spectrum.
reference run “As is” condition. Data acquired before any weights are added or removed.
reference spectra/
waveform
A measurement taken at a point when an equipment is in good operating
conditions.
RMS The magnitude of a signal calculated or measured by the root mean square method.
Equal to 0.707 times the peak value for a pure sinusoidal signal.
rotations per
minute, RPM
Represents rotations per minute and is equal to 60 times frequency in Hz. Equivalent
to CPM (cycles per minute).
route One or more machines and their respective measurement points organized in an
efficient sequence for data collection.
route data file An intermediate file (with .RDA extension) for transferring route data from an
analyzer to an AMS Machinery Manager database. Typically used to transmit route
data collected by a remote analyzer without access to a AMS Machinery Manager
client or database. A route data file can be created using AMS Machinery Manager
Data Transfer or AMS Standalone Data Transfer.
route definition file An intermediate file (with .RDF extension) for loading a route to an analyzer without
access to a AMS Machinery Manager client or database. The file can be created
inAMS Machinery Manager Data Transfer. The file can be transferred to an analyzer
using AMS Machinery Manager Data Transfer or AMS Standalone Data Transfer.
shaft current/
voltage
Variations in electric motor air gaps, windings, and metal (rotor and frame) result in
a fluctuating magnetic field which is cut by conducting material, in this case, the
motor shaft. This condition gives rise to a current loop consisting of the shaft,
bearings, and casing which can damage the motor shaft and bearings.
shaft probe This CSI device is used to acquire shaft current/voltage measurements on electric
motors.
soft foot A term used to describe any condition where tightening or loosening the bolts of a
single foot distorts the machine frame.
storage options Settings that determine conditions when data is saved in the route and at specific
measurement points when a measurement is taken with an analyzer.
subharmonics Vibration frequencies which are integer fractions of the running speed (example ½
RPM, 1/3 RPM, etc.) or some other fundamental frequency.
system lag Phase difference between heavy spot and high spot.
tachometer Pulse signal used to measure shaft turning speed. This may also be used to
synchronize the acquisition of dynamic data.
thermal growth Vertical and/or horizontal movement a machine experiences due to the change in
temperature when it is started to run up to operating speed and temperature. This
can cause significant machine alignment change.
tolerance Maximum allowed deviation from a specified alignment position.
