Term
Explanation
Kernel generation
Basic program of the operating system, which is customer-specifically
generated for the system. A new kernel is generated as well when
changing the RAM disk or node numbers (network).
Laboratory host computer

Liquid level
Filling height in the sample tube.
Liquid level error
No liquid level detected within the defined parameters.
Liquid level measuring
see 'Liquid level detection'
Liquid level sensory
mechanism
Sensory mechanism for liquid level detection.
LIS
The Laboratory Information System performs order and result
processing. It sends patient orders to the system, receives related
results, and, after validation, makes these data available throughout a
hospital.
LLD
Physical detection of the liquid surface.
Log file
A set of data, typically stored in the control unit, that traces
instrument-related or operator-related activities.
Main menu
Menu bar consisting of different menu blocks.
Matrix
Describes the target coordinates of the sorting area.
Maximum steps
Maximum steps allowed by the mechanics.
Menu system
Structure of the entire menu which consists of main and submenus.
Online help
On-screen user and service documentation.
On-screen message
Field on the screen containing information.
Operating mode
The mode in which the instrument processes samples.
Operating system
All programs to control and monitor the execution of the user
software and to coordinate and ensure the mode of operation.
Operator
Person directly responsible for operating and using the system.
Output module
Part of the rack module that transfers the processed primary samples
to the output tray.
Output tray
Carrier for 20 or 30 Hitachi 5-position racks to be placed in the rack
output module.
Pipetting
Uptake and dispensing of fluid.
Pipetting unit
A device used for pipetting (aspirating and dispensing) a specific
amount of sample material from a primary tube to a secondary tube.
Pipetting volume
see 'Total pipetting volume'
Primary sample
A sample drawn from a patient.
Primary tube
The original tube containing the sample that has been drawn from the
patient.
Prime
Intensive rinsing and filling of the tubing system with fluid from the
connected water container.
Profile
A combination of several tests.
Profile abbreviation
The unique abbreviation of a profile.
Profile name
The name of a profile.
Program
A program is loaded into the main memory (started) and performs it
allocated tasks.
