Obtaining an IPv4 Address Using Auto IP
If you select the “autoip” option, randomly selects an IPv4 link-local address from
169.254.0.1~169.254.255.254. Before starting to use it, the switch tests to see if the
address is already in use.
If the “autoip” option is saved to the startup-config file (step 6), then the switch will
randomly select a link-local address as soon as it is powered on.
To automatically select an IP address using, complete the following steps:
1. From the Global Configuration mode prompt, type “interface vlan 1” to access
the interface-configuration mode. Press <Enter>.
2. At the interface-configuration mode prompt, enter the “ip address autoip
command, and press <Enter>.
3. Type “end” to return to the Privileged Exec mode. Press <Enter>.
4. Wait a few minutes, and then check the IP configuration settings by typing the
show ip interface” command. Press <Enter>.
5. Then save your configuration changes by typing “copy running-config startup-
config.” Enter the startup file name and press <Enter>.
Console(config)#interface vlan 1
Console(config-if)#ip address autoip
Console(config-if)#end

Obtaining an IPv4 Address Using DHCP or BOOTP
If you select the “bootp” or “dhcp option, the system will immediately start
broadcasting service requests. IP will be enabled but will not function until a
BOOTP or DHCP reply has been received. Requests are broadcast every few minutes
using exponential backoff until IP configuration information is obtained from a
