3.5.2 Cycling on the road
General information
When participating in road traffic with your
e-bike, consider the following general rules
of conduct:
Observe and comply with the coun-
try-specific and regional road traffic reg-
ulations applicable to your e-bike, as well
as the regulations regarding the equip-
ment of the e-bike.
8
Wear light-colored clothing with reflective
elements so that you are clearly visible to
other road users.
Do not use mobile devices such as smart-
phones, MP3 players or similar while
cycling.
Keep both hands on the handlebars; do
not ride hands-free.
Drive with foresight and show consid-
eration for other road users. Make sure
that no one is harmed, endangered,
obstructed or harassed.
Using your pedelec in road traffic
In addition to the general instructions, the
following applies to the use of your pedelec
in road traffic:
Your pedelec must be equipped with the
lighting components required for bicycles
(headlight plus a white reflector at the
front, rear light plus a red reflector at the
rear, reflectors on the pedals, side reflec-
tors/reflector strips on the front and rear
wheel).
Ride in lanes designated for bicycles.
Wear a suitable bicycle helmet for your
safety
9
.
Do not drive under the influence of alco-
hol, intoxicants, or impairing drugs.
8 See the information under “Using your pedelec in road
traffic” or “Using your S-pedelec in road traffic” in this
chapter.
9 Tested according to country-specific/regional regula-
tions or according to standard DIN EN 1078 with CE
mark of conformity.
Using your S-pedelec in road traffic
In addition to the general instructions,
the following applies to the use of your
S-pedelec in road traffic:
As a motor vehicle, your S-pedelec is
subject to registration and insurance.
The registration is valid only for the
vehicle with its original equipment. No
modifications may therefore be made
to S-pedelecs. Only completely identi-
cal, original spare parts may be used for
repairs.
Country-specific or regional age restric-
tions (minimum age) apply when riding
S-pedelecs.
Helmets and driver's licenses are com-
pulsory for S-pedelecs throughout the
EU
10
and in some other countries (in a
nationally adapted form).
Use only the lanes approved for
S-pedelecs. As a rule, S-pedelecs are not
permitted to be operated on bicycle paths.
Your S-pedelec must be equipped with
the prescribed components (rearview mir-
ror, license plate holder, horn, brake light,
lighting components with permanent light).
The components must be correctly
attached and always in proper working
order.
The use of an S-pedelec with a child seat
and/or trailer (child, cargo, dog trailer,
etc.) is not permitted.
3.5.3 Cycling on terrain (off-road)
i
Important: Pay attention to respon-
sible cycling behavior towards
nature, the environment and fellow
human beings. Such behavior pre-
serves nature as the basis for prac-
ticing your sport and keeps coexis-
tence with other users free of conflict.
Therefore, observe the following rules when
cycling on terrain:
Wear protectors and helmet for your safety.
Drive only on marked trails as otherwise
nature will be damaged.
10 Driver's license for motor vehicles class L1e-B (in
Germany).
