WARNING!
Risk of accident and injury
If the chain of your e-bike comes off,
the coaster brake is ineffective.
• If possible, do not brake exclusively
with the coaster brake, but also with
the second brake of your e-bike in
case the chain jumps off and the
coaster brake fails.
15 Gear shift systems
15.1 Derailleur gears
15.1.1 Functionality of derailleur gears
The shifting mechanism of derailleur gears
is based on the transmission ratio of the
chain. The speed at which you ride is deter-
mined by the respective chainring and pin-
ion combination through which the chain
runs.
22
You shift by using the control element on
the handlebars to control the shifting unit
23,
which shifts the chain to the various chain-
rings and pinions.
The shifting unit is controlled either mechan-
ically or electronically.

22 The number of gears on your e-bike results from the
model-dependent number of chainrings and pinions on
your e-bike.
23 Depending on the model, the shifting unit is also called
"rear derailleur" or "front derailleur".
15.1.2 Use of derailleur gears
Important: Despite perfectly
adjusted derailleur gears, noise can
be generated by a chain running at
an angle. Noise of this sort is nor-
mal and does not cause any dam-
age to the shifting components.
WARNING!
Risk of accident and injury
The use of faulty, incorrectly adjusted
or worn gear shift components is dan-
gerous and can lead to falls.
• In case of uncertainty, be sure to
have the gear shift checked and, if
necessary, readjusted by a FLYER
specialist dealer.
NOTE! Risk of damage!
Incorrect shifting can damage the gear
shift.
• Do not pedal backwards when
changing gears.
Important: In addition, observe the
corresponding manufacturer's
instructions for your derailleur gears
or for your control element.
• Make sure that the crank rotates when shift-
ing (forward), but do not pedal too hard.
• For shifting with mechanical derailleur
gears:
Push the lower lever on the control
element up (1 or 2 steps) to shift up one
or two gears.
Push/pull the upper lever on the con-
trol element down (1 or 2 steps) to shift
down one or two gears.
• For shifting with electronic derailleur gears:
Observe the associated manufacturer's
instructions for your electronic derailleur
gears.
Important: The battery of electronic
derailleur gears must be charged
regularly. The corresponding infor-
mation can also be found in the cor-
responding manufacturer's manual
for your electronic derailleur gears.
