802.1w Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) and 802.1d Spanning Tree Protocol (STP)
802.1p Spanning-Tree Protocol (STP)
Configuring the Switch To Use the 802.1d Spanning Tree Protocol
(STP). In the default configuration, the switch is set to RSTP (that is, 802.1w
Rapid Spanning Tree), and spanning tree operation is disabled. To reconfigure
the switch to 802.1d spanning tree, you must:
1. Change the spanning tree protocol version to stp.
2. Use write memory to save the change to the startup-configuration.
3. Reboot the switch.
4. If you have not previously enabled spanning-tree operation on the switch,
use the spanning-tree command again to enable STP operation.
Syntax: spanning-tree protocol-version stp
write memory
boot
For example:
Figure 13-10. Steps for Changing Spanning-Tree Operation to the 802.1d Protocol
Enabling (or Disabling) Spanning Tree Operation on the Switch.
This command enables (or disables) spanning tree operation for either span-
ning tree versionSTP/802.1d or RSTP/802.1w (the default). Before using this
command, ensure that the version of spanning tree you want to use is active
on the switch. (See the preceding topic, Configuring the Switch To Use the
802.1d Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) on page 13-23.)
Syntax: [ no ] spanning-tree
Default: Disabled
For example:
HPswitch spanning-tree
Enabling STP implements the spanning tree protocol for all physical ports on
the switch, regardless of whether multiple VLANs are configured. Disabling
STP removes protection against redundant loops that can significantly slow
or halt a network.
