ECM Self Diagnostics (Electronic Control Module)
Figure 427 Function diagram for the ECM
The ECM d oes the following:
• Monitors and controls the engine operation and
performance
• Enables Power Takeoff and cruise control
• Commun icates eng ine and vehicle inf ormation to
instrument cluster
• Enables electronically controlled transmission (for
vehicles with feature)
• Enables diagnostic programming tools
Fault Detection / Management
The ECM automatically performs diagnostic
self-checks. The ECM self-test includes memory,
programming, and internal power supply checks.
The ECM will detect internal Diagnostic Trouble
Codes (DTCs) depending on the severity of the
problem. Additionally, the ECM provides D T C
management strategies to permit limited engine and
vehicle operation.
When DTCs 613, 614, 621, 622, and 623 are set by
the ECM, the amber EN GINE lamp will be illu minated.
