4.1.6 Serial Bridging Mode
Withserialbridging,theserialdataonanominatedserialportononeConsoleServerisencapsulatedintonetworkpackets
and then transported over a network to a second Console Server where is then represented as serial data. So the two Console
Servers effectively act as a virtual serial cable over an IP network.
OneConsoleServerisconguredtobetheServer.TheServer serial port to be bridged is set in Console Server mode with
eitherRFC2217orRAWenabled(asdescribedinChapter 4.1.2 – Console Server Mode).
FortheClientConsoleServer,theserialporttobebridgedmustbesetinBridgingMode:
• SelectSerial Bridging Mode and specify the IP address of the Server Console Server and the TCP port address of the
remoteserialport(forRFC2217bridgingthiswillbe5001-5048)
• BydefaultthebridgingclientwilluseRAWTCPsoyoumustselectRFC2217ifthisistheConsoleServermodeyouhave
specified on the server Console Server
• YoumaysecurethecommunicationsoverthelocalEthernetbyenablingSSHhoweveryouwillneedtogenerateand
uploadkeys(referChapter 14 – Advanced Configuration)
4.1.7 Syslog
Inadditiontoinbuiltloggingandmonitoring(whichcanbeappliedtoserial-attachedandnetwork-attachedmanagement
accesses,ascoveredinChapter 7 - Alerts and Logging)theConsoleServercanalsobeconguredtosupporttheremote
syslog protocol on a per serial port basis:
• SelecttheSyslog Facility/Priority fields to enable logging of traffic on the selected serial port to a syslog server; and to
appropriatelysortandactionthoseloggedmessages(i.e.redirectthem/sendalertemailetc.)
Forexampleifthecomputerattachedtoserialport3shouldneversendanythingoutonitsserialconsoleport,the
Administrator can set the Facility for that port to local0(local0 .. local7aremeantforsitelocalvalues),andthePriority to
critical.Atthispriority,iftheConsoleServersyslogserverdoesreceiveamessage,itwillautomaticallyraiseanalert.Referto
