saturationalarmscausedbymotionartifact.Itdoesnotapply
topulserate.
WithbothtraditionalandSatSecondspulseoximetryalarmmanagement,upper
andlowersaturationalarmlimitsareset.Withtraditionalalarmmanagement,as
soonasalimitisreachedorviolated,analarmisgenerated.WithSatSeconds
alarmmanagement,acumulativelimitviolationindexiscalculated,andwhenthis
indexreachestheSatSecondsalarmmanagementlimit,analarmisgenerated.The
cumulativelimitviolationindexissimplythesumofviolationmagnitudescalculated
eachsecondthelimitisbeingviolated.
Forexample,supposethattheSpO
2
lowalarmlimitis90%,meaningthat91%is
thelowestvaluenotproducinganalarminthetraditionalcase.Nowsupposethe
followingconsecutivevaluesarerecordedeachsecond:92%,89%,87%,87%,80%.
Thecorrespondingviolationmagnitudesare0,2,4,4,11,andthecumulativelimit
violationindexiscorrespondingly0,2,6,10,21.IftheSaturationSecondslimitsetting
was20,analarmwouldbeannunciatedatthispoint,orafterfourseconds.Whenthe
SpO
2
saturationvalueisnolongerinviolation,thealarmnoticationclearsandthe
cumulativelimitviolationindexdecrementsinthesamemannerinwhichitincrements.
Withsomepatients,saturationlevelsmayfrequentlydropbelowthelimit,butnot
stayingbelowthelimitlongenoughfortheSatSecondsalarmmanagementtime
settingtobereached.Insuchsituations,thatis,whenthreeormorelimitviolations
occurwithin60seconds,analarmsoundsevenifthecumulativelimitviolationindex
hasnotreachedtheSatSecondsalarmmanagementtimesettingvalue.

Saturationlevelsmayuctuateaboveandbelowanalarmlimit,re-enteringthe
acceptablerange(non-alarmrange)severaltimes.Duringsuchuctuation,theSpO
2
deviceintegratesthenumberofSpO
2
saturationpoints,bothpositiveandnegative,
untileithertheSatSecondsalarmmanagementlimitisreachedorthesaturationlevel
returnstowithinthenormalrangeandremainsthere.
WhenanSpO
2
saturationvalueexceedsanalarmlimit,apiechart(circulargraph)
intheSpO
2
parametermenubeginstollinaclockwisedirection.Assecondspass
andthevalueiscomparedagainstthealarmlimitsandtheSatSecondsalarm
managementsetting,thechartllsproportionately.Whenthepiechartiscompletely
lled,indicatingthattheSatSecondsalarmmanagementlimithasbeenreached,an
alarmsounds.WhentheSpO
2
valueiswithinthesetlimits,theSatSecondsalarm
managementpiechartemptiesinacounterclockwisedirection.
