Non-invasivebloodpressure
CAUTION
Devicesthatexertpressureontissuehavebeenassociated
withpurpura,skinavulsion,compartmentalsyndrome,
ischemia,and/orneuropathy.Tominimizethesepotential
problems,especiallywhenmonitoringatfrequentintervals
oroverextendedperiodsoftime,makesurethecuffis
appliedappropriatelyandexaminethecuffsiteandthelimb
distaltothecuffregularlyforsignsofimpededbloodow.
Periodicallycheckpatientlimbcirculationdistaltothecuff.
CheckfrequentlywhenusingautoNIBPin1and2minute
intervals.The1and2minuteintervalsarenotrecommended
forextendedperiodsoftime.
NIBPmeasurementlimitations
Apatient'svitalsignsmayvarydramaticallyduringtheuseofcardiovascular
agentssuchasthosethatraiseorlowerbloodpressureorthosethatincrease
ordecreaseheartrate.
AlthoughautomatedNIBPisgenerallysafeandaccurate,ithassomelimitations.It
maybedifculttoobtainreliablereadingsunderthefollowingcircumstances:
Shockaccompaniedbylowbloodpressureandpulse.
Variationsinbloodpressureandpulserate.
Inpatientswithanatomicabnormalities,suchascalcied(hardened)arteries
orsubclaviancompression.
Compressionofthecuffcausedbyshivering,seizures,armmovement,or
bumpingagainstthecuff.
Propersizingandpositionofthecuffareessentialtoobtainingreliablereadings:
Toolargeacuffisbetterthantoosmallacuff,whichmayyieldfalselyhigh
readings.
Thecuffshouldalsotproperlyoverthebrachialartery(orwhateverarteryis
beingused)sothatthecuffissufcientlysensitivetovibrationsintheartery.
NIBPpointstonote
Thisequipmentissuitableforuseinthepresenceofelectrosurgery,astested
accordingtoIEC60601-2-49clause202.6.2.101Electrosurgeryinterference.
Forinformationonmaterialsusedinaccessoriesandtheirbiocompatibility,refer
totheinstructionsforuseintheaccessorypackage.
Themeasurementhasbeenvalidatedwithpatientpopulationsrequiring
clinicalinvestigationsaccordingtoISO81060–2:2013apartfrompregnantor
pre-eclampticpatients.
UsetheappropriatesizeNIBPcuffforthepatient(adult,child,orinfant).
TheNIBPInfantsoftwaresettingsapplytothefollowingpatientpopulations:
Neonatesfrombirthto29daysofage.
Infantsfrom1monthto3yearsofage.
Operatorposition:Makesureyoudonotleanonthecufforhoses,anddo
notdisturbthepatientinanywayduringthemeasurement.Positionyourself
accordingly.
Themeasurementsite,patient’sposition(standing,sitting,lyingdown),exercise,or
physiologicconditioncanaffecttheNIBPreadings.
