If you enter a value under “Password Uniqueness”, you should also enter a value for “Allow
Changes in _ Days” under “Minimum Password Age”.
Maximum values for the various options are as follows:
• 1 to 999 days for “Maximum Password Age” and “Minimum Password Age”
• 1 to 14 characters for “Minimum Password Length”
• 1 to 24 passwords for “Remember _ Passwords” under “Password Uniqueness”
Note: You must log on as the NT User Administrator to add and delete user accounts,
assign users to a local group, and change user passwords.
Password Guidelines
The example below may help to clarify how an Administrator could implement a reasonably
secure policy. Each customer should determine how strong is strong enough, and that their
policy conforms to regulations within their industry (for example- 21 CFR Part 11). This
example policy can be made stronger by increasing the required length or diversity of types of
characters in the password, and the frequency with which the password must be changed.
Your password should contain characters from at least three of the four classes shown in the
following table (Table 2).

1. English Upper Case Letters A, B, C, ... Z
2. English Lower Case Letters a, b, c, ... z
3. Westernized Arabic Numerals 0, 1, 2, ... 9
4. Non-alphanumeric (“special characters”).
For example, punctuation, symbols.

• At a minimum, your password should be at least six characters long. For stronger
security, choose longer passwords with characters from most or all four classes.
• Your password should not contain your e-mail name or any part of your full name.
• Your password should be changed at least every 45 days.
• New passwords should never be the same as any of your last eight passwords.
