B Channel Bearer channel. ISDN utilises multiplexed channels
that are transmitted over the same physical medium.
The B channels typically carry the user's voice/data/
video.
Basic Rate An ISDN configuration that uses a standard 2-
Interface (BRI) wire telephone line to provide two B-channels at
64 kbps and one D-channel at 16 kbps.
Bearer service The types of service (such as voice, data, facsimile,
etc.) that the B-channel can carry. Also called bearer
capability (BC).
BER Bit Error Ratio/Rate. A measure of transmission
quality: the number of errored bits divided by the total
number of bits transmitted in a specific interval.
Bit Error Rate A test that sends a pattern of bits on a data line
Test (BERT) and then compares the bits received to the bits that
were sent to detect any errors.
BRI Basic Rate ISDN.
Bus An electrical path providing a connection for a group
of devices.

Call screening A facility that enables a telephone to respond
differently to an incoming call, depending on the
number that was called (CPN) or the number of the
caller (CLI).
Call waiting A telephone service that allows a call to a busy
telephone to be held while the busy telephone is
notified that a second call is waiting.
