DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

Cylinder Block
The cylinder block is a single-piece design made
of high-strength alloyed gray cast iron. The deep
skirt extends well below the crankshaft center line
and incorporates seven main bearings. The
bearing caps are made of ductile iron and use
buttress screws at the intermediate locations.
Replaceable wet-dry sleeves line the cylinder
bores.
Due to the large camshaft diameter, the cam bore
position is shifted up and outboard to operate the
unit pumps and provide cam-to-crank clearance
(Figure 74). To accommodate this cam position,
the push rod holes are angled four degrees and
the air compressor angled outboard. The crank
and cam timing gears do not mesh directly, but
power transmission occurs through an idler gear
mounted in an idler gear bore in the front face of
the cylinder block. The right-front flange on the
cylinder block provides a mounting surface for the
fuel supply pump.
