Appendix A: TARGA 3000 Effects Guide
Tree Builder
“Master Effects” in the TARGA 3000 are built by combining a number of simpler effects
which act on sources. Although at first this may seem complicated, this mode of operation
is one of the features that makes the TARGA 3000 a powerful creative tool; it is drawn
more from the core technology of compositing systems than from traditional editing
systems.
The “effects tree” is the core of the effect, and this must be understood before moving any
further in the programming of specific parameters. An example effect tree is shown
below:
At the top left of the tree is the name of the effect that is being programmed, in this case
“TARGA Effect.” Effect names are typically kept short so that they can be clearly read in
the Picker. Underneath this is a “Compositor” effect and underneath this is a “Timeline
Input.” In addition there are a number of “slots” that are marked as being “empty.” The
tree should be understood as the flow of the image data moving from the bottom right up
towards the top left. In this case the timeline input gets a compositor applied to it, and
then it emerges as “TARGA Effect.” This is an example of a relatively simple effect, but
these trees can become quite complicated as you will see in some examples later on.
