Analog Modulation
Configuring AM
Wideband AM (E4438C)
Wideband AM offers bandwidth (up to 40 MHz) beyond that of standard internal AM (10 kHz) by utilizing
an external modulating signal. The external modulating signal is connected to the front-panel I INPUT
connector.
NOTE When you select wideband AM and turn it on, the signal generator automatically sets the
I INPUT connector for 50 ohms. This setting is independent of the
MUX > I/Q Source
setting, so the
I/Q Source setting may differ. If you change the I/Q Source setting while
wideband AM is on, it disables the wideband AM signal. To reenable the signal, turn
wideband AM off and then back on.
The following steps set up wideband AM:
1. Press the
AM hardkey.
2. Press
AM Path 1 2 WB to WB.
3. Connect an external AM source to the front-panel I INPUT connector and turn the external modulation
on. The maximum I input level is 1 volt rms and 10 volt peak. AM sensitivity is fixed at 0.5V = 100%.
The AM modulation depth is a linear function of the input voltage so that 0.25 V = 50%.
4. Press
AM Off On to On.
Refer to the ESG data sheet for AM wideband specifications.
