DROP AND INSERT OPERATION
A drop and insert multiplexer operates at a central node on a three (or more) node system. In the
example shown in Figure 6, node 2 has a drop and insert multiplexer whose DI/A port is connected to
the transmission line to node 1, and whose DI/B port is connected to the transmission line to node 3.
Individual payload channels may connect nodes 1 and 2, 1 and 3, or 2 and 3.
In the drop and insert multiplexer at node 2, a DS-961D module can be set to transmit and receive
either via the DI/A port (toward node 1) or via the DI/B port (toward node 3), but not both.
When a DS-961D is installed in a terminal multiplexer (node 1 or node 3), its TX-A switch must be set
DOWN. However, when it is installed in a drop and insert multiplexer (node 2) the TX-A switch
setting must be DOWN to transmit and receive via the DI/A port (toward node 1) and UP to transmit
and receive via the DI/B port (toward node 3).

COMPATIBILITY WITH EARLIER DS-961D VERSIONS
The DS-961D is circuit-compatible with both the DS-961B and DS-961C modules; that is, a circuit
can be established with a DS-961D at one end and either a DS-961B or DS-961C at the other end.
The DS-961D is essentially identical to the DS-961C with the addition of remote access and control,
so there are no compatibility issues. However, the DS-961B does not support DTE timing, so a DS-
961D being used at the other end of a circuit from a DS-961B must have SW3-4 set to the UP position.
