3.2 CHANNEL MODULE TYPES
There are several types of channel modules which can be used with the IMUX 2000 M-DACS
Multiplexer. Detailed information on each channel module type appears in the following sections of
this manual:
Module Type Additional Information
Asynchronous Data Section 11
Synchronous Data Section 12
Voice Section 13
Protection and Control Section 14
Video Section 15
Special Interfaces Section 16
Sections 11 through 16 of this manual contain Instruction Data Sheets for all channel modules
available as of the date this manual was printed. Contact the factory or an RFL Sales Representative
for the latest listing of available channel modules.
3.3 CHANNEL MODULE CHARACTERISTICS
3.3.1 RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CIRCUITS AND TIME SLOTS
Some channel modules provide one or several circuits over a single 64-Kbps time slot. For example, a
single-port RS-449 module can support one synchronous data circuit operating at bit rates up to 64
Kbps. On the other hand, a seven-port RS-232 channel module can support up to seven asynchronous
data circuits, each operating at a bit rate of up to 1.2 Kbps. Both of these channel module types require
only one 64-Kbps time slot in each direction of transmission.
Other channel module types require multiple time slots per circuit. For example, an RFL DS-64NC
Wideband Synchronous Data Module may be configured to operate from 64 Kbps to 1.536 Mbps. It
may use one time slot within a given T1 circuit, or all twenty-four.
3.3.2 POINT-TO-POINT AND POINT-TO-MULTIPOINT CIRCUITS
M-DACS-T1 RFL Electronics Inc.
Most circuits provided by IMUX 2000 M-DACS systems are point-to-point. However, several types of
channel modules can be configured for point-to-multipoint operation. For example, a data polling
channel module can be used to communicate with several locations over a single DS0 for point-to-
multipoint operation. Orderwire voice modules communicate using a similar arrangement.
