Chapter 17: Troubleshooting high CPU
utilization
Use the commands in this section to troubleshoot high CPU utilization.
The
CPU Utilization feature provides data about CPU usage by the processes running on Secure Router
2330/4134. You can view CPU utilization information for the past 10 seconds (s), 1 minute (min), 5 minutes
(min), or since system startup. The router displays CPU utilization as a percentage. The CPU utilization
information allows you to see how the CPU was used during a specific time interval. This feature helps
you to channelize traffic through the secure router to make efficient use of available CPU time. As a result
you can reduce data loss due to sufficient CPU time not being available.
You can configure three levels of CPU utilization threshold:
• Green threshold – indicates that CPU utilization is below optimum range. Specified by the user.
• Yellow threshold – indicates that CPU utilization is in optimum range. This is the range between
green and red threshold.
• Red threshold – indicates that CPU utilization is above optimum range. Specified by the user.
To configure the CPU utilization threshold and enable threshold notification, see
configure process cpu
threshold total notify on page 369
.
When you receive a notification that the CPU utilization is in the red threshold, reduce the traffic flow to
the CPU until the CPU utilization returns to the yellow or green threshold range.
To reduce the traffic flow to the CPU, redirect the traffic to another router by reducing the number of
Ethernet and WAN interfaces on the affected router.
configure process cpu threshold total notify
Use this command to configure the threshold notification for total CPU utilization.
You
can configure the system to generate an event notification for total system CPU utilization.
This notification provides data regarding the peak and average CPU utilization in percentages
as well as the color (green/yellow/red) of the entire system. Notifications can be generated
either only once when the corresponding threshold is breached or periodically at regular
intervals.
Note:
To receive these notifications, ensure the following:
