Chapter 4 - Operational Procedures -
AS-410M Auto Slide Preparation System

4-7-2 Checks during the slide preparation
The AS-410M automatically stops running when an error message occurs due to any mechanical
trouble detected by a sensor, a solenoid switch, etc. For corrective action, refer to Chapter 5 “Errors
and Troubleshooting” of this Operation Manual.
This section provides a checklist of troubles that may occur during the slide preparation but are
not detected/displayed as system errors (See the checklist below). These troubles occur in
association with faulty sectioning or faulty attachment of thin sections to the carrier tape or slides.
Check these troubles after the start of section slide preparation.
Table 4-8: Checks on AS-410M during section slide preparation
Item to be
checked
Location Point to be confirmed
Temperature
Extension Device
Reading of 45°C (when set to standard temp. of
45°C).
Dry chamber
Reading of 40°C (when set to standard temp. of
40°C).
Carrier tape Take-up reel
The tape is rewound normally after the rewinding
action and free from slack or any other problems.
Humidifying
water
Humidifying water
nozzle
Before sectioning, the nozzle sprays moistening
water normally (Applicable when “moistening water
ON” is selected as a parameter.)
Air blow Sectioning Unit
During polishing, the blower blows air from above
on the sectioning blade to blow off paraffin shavings.
Application
medium
Application medium
dripping unit
Application medium accurately dripped onto slides.
Slicing
Sectioning Unit
Slices are cut in the same shape as the sample
block surface.
Peel-and-stick
(mounting)
Sectioning Unit
Mounting sections onto the carrier tape normally.
No wrinkles or jagged edges.
Mounting
movement
Mounting unit
Normal attachment from the carrier tape to the
slides.
① Temperature
The Sectioning Unit cools down to approximately 24°C or lower. After being attached to slides,
sections are heated by heaters during the extension process (on the extension device and conveyor)
and the drying process (in the slide collection box). After turning the power on, leave the System for
approximately 30 minutes (varies depending on the ambient temperature). Then start operations
after confirming that the respective components reach their respective temperatures. Refer to 3-15
“Adjusting the temperature controllers” for the specified temperatures.
② Humidifying water
Moistening water is sprayed from the humidifying water nozzle for a duration set as a parameter
before sample block sectioning. At this point, ensure that moistening water is properly sprayed in
mist form.
If no moistening water is sprayed, it may be that moistening water is not sufficiently fed from the
humidifying-water bottle to the humidifier.
A low water level in the humidifier usually causes a caution error that appears on the operation
panel. (See 5-1-3-8 “Humidifying water low caution”)
Contact us if no caution error occurs when moistening water fails to be sprayed in mist form.
③ Application medium (drip water)
As for slice attachment to carrier tape and section transfer to slides, carry out checks
after starting operation.
