MIDIinstruments,youmustsetbendrangesonthedevicesthemselves.
ChangingprogramssendsaBendRangemessagewiththecurrentprogram’svalues.Sodoes
pressingPanic,whichisaquickway
toresetyourPC3KorMIDIslavesifyouveuseda
controllertomodulatethebendrange.
Aux Bend 1 Up and Aux Bend 1 Down
LikeBendRangeUp/Down,AuxBend1definestherangeforPitchBendmessages,butdoesso
forthosephysicalcontrollersassignedtocontrollerdestination21,MIDI21.Therearetwo
parametersrelatedtoAuxBend1:anupwardvalue(AuxBend1Up)andadownwardvalue
(AuxBend1Dwn).Thismeansthatyoucansetdifferent
valuesforupwardanddownwardpitch
shifting.Forexample,youcouldgetthePitchWheeltogiveyoubothvibratoandwhammybar
effectsfortheguitarprograminasetup.Inthezonethatcontainstheguitarprogram,set
AuxBend1Upto2STandAuxBend1Dwnto12ST,thenassignthe
PWUpandPWDnparameters
ontheWHEELpagetoavalueofMIDI21.NowmovingthePitchWheelupgivesyouawhole
toneofupwardbend,whilemovingitdowngivesyouafulloctaveofdownwardbend.
Inmostfactorysetups,AuxBend1issetasthedestinationfor
theoptionalRibboncontroller
(seeTheRIBBONPage on page 740).
Aux Bend 2 Range
ThePC3Kallowsyoutospecifyathirdpitchbendrange;thisiscalledAuxBend2,anditdefines
therangeforcontrollerssettocontrollerdestination15,MIDI15.ForAuxBend2,youcanset
onlyonerangeforbothupwardanddownwardpitchbending.
ANoteAboutContinuous
ControllersandTheBENDPage:
UnlikethePitchWheelandRibboncontroller,othercontinuouscontrollers,suchasaslider,will
notautomaticallyreturntotheoriginalcenterpitch.Thiscanmakeithardtoaccuratelyreturn
thecontrollertoit’scenterpositionbyhand.Inthesecases,itisusefulto
useaseparate
controllerforbendingonlyupordown.Forexample,tohaveaslideronlybendup,useaslider
withanAddvalueof64andaScalevalueof50%,andCurvsettoLinear.Thebottomofthe
sliderwillnowbethecenterpitch,and
thetopofthesliderwillbethetopofyourbendrange.
Tohaveaslideronlybenddown,useasliderwithanAddvalueof‐127andaScalevalueof
150%,andCurvsettoLinear.Thetopofthesliderwillnowbethecenter
pitch,andthebottom
ofthesliderwillbethebottomofyourbendrange.Seepage 730formoreonsettingcontinuous
controllerparameters.
Controllers
ControllereditingisoneofthestrongestaspectsofthePC3K’susefulnessasthemaincontroller
forasophisticatedMIDIstudio.Inthissection,we’lltalkabouttwodifferenttypesof
“controllers”astheyapplytothePC3K.Oneisthephysicalcontrollers:thewheels,buttons,
pedals,etc.thatyoumove
withyourfingersorfeet.TheotherisMIDIControllers,whichare
MIDIcommandssentbythePC3K.Forourpurposes,“MIDIControllers”includesthecomplete
setofControllersdefinedbytheMIDISpecification,aswellaspitchbend,aftertouch,andafew
otherusefulMIDIcommands.Tofendoffconfusion,
we’llrefertothePC3 Ksphysical
controllerswithalowercasec,andMIDIControllerswithanuppercaseC.
