14.5 Washing and drying the dust lters
About lter washing and drying
For environments where popcorn grease and such can contaminate the lters, Barco advises the client to purchase one extra set
of lters to cover d rying time, as well as taking following extra precautions and instructions pertaining to lter cleaning and drying.
Cleansing agent
To clean sticky, g reasy dust lters we suggest usage of Sodium carbonate crystals (Na
2
CO
3
). S odium carbonate (Often called
washing soda, soda crystals,orsal sod a in the detergent section of s tores) is widely u sed to effectively remove oil, grease, alcohol
stains The product itself is relatively safe, sodium carbonate is used in toothpastes and as a food additive (E500). Potential
Hazards are described in the section "Hazards", page 175 .

This cleaning procedure assumes that the lters are already rem oved from their slots.
Take into acco unt that the time needed to dry the dust lters may b e 24 h ours o r more. For that, it’s recom -
mended to have a second set of dust lters which can be use
d w hile clean ing the rst set.
Necessary tools
Bucket with hot water.
Sodium carbonate, 30 gram (handful) per liter hot water.
How to wash and dry the dust lters?
1. Make a solution with a r atio of 3 0 gram (a ha ndful) sodium carbonate to 1 liter hot water.
2. S oak the dust lters in the s olution for 30 t o 60 m inutes. The greas e should be dissolved after 1 hour.
3. If the dust lter is still clogged repeat this procedure from step 1.
4. Rinse the dust lters with clean water to ush all grease residue away.
5. S hake out all ex cess liquid b y repeatedly swinging the lter to-and-fro in a centrifugal action.
6. T hen allow the lters to dry thoroughly. Typically this c an t ake up to 2 4h an d more, depending on the drying c onditions.
Note: Drying time of the dust lters c an be up to 24h or more. Drying time can be shorter when being done in a w ell-ventilated
area.
Tip: To speed-up drying, allow the lter(s ) to
dry at 50°C max in a well ventilated room .
CAUTION: UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD WET FILTERS BE INSTALLED BACK INTO THE PROJEC-
TOR. THIS CAN HAV E SERIOUS SAFETY CONSEQUE NCES AS WELL AS JEOPARDIZE THE INTERNAL OP -
TICS OF THE SYSTE M.
CAUTION: Do not install/use damaged dust lters. Replace d amaged dust lters immediately with new dust
lters o f the same type. See h
