Understanding How VLANs Work
A VLAN is a group of end stations with a common set of requirements, independent of their physical
location. A VLAN has the same attributes as a physical LAN but allows you to group the end stations
even if they are not located physically on the same LAN segment.
A VLAN allows you to group the ports on a switch to limit the unicast, multicast, and broadcast traffic
flooding. The flooded traffic that originates from a particular VLAN is flooded only out the ports that
belong to that VLAN.
Figure 11-1 shows an example of VLANs that are segmented into logically defined networks.
