Magnetic Stripe Reader
This section describes how to set up and use the snap-on MSR with the mobile computer. The MSR snaps on to
the bottom of the mobile computer and can be easily removed when not in use.

When attached to the mobile computer, the MSR:
•
Provides power for operating the mobile computer, with the appropriate power connection.
•
Allows the mobile computer to capture data from magnetic stripe cards. (To download MSR data capture

•
Provides serial connection through the serial pass-through port for communication with a serial device, such
as a host computer. For communication setup procedures, see Serial Communication Setup on page 2-44.
•
Provides USB connection through the USB pass-through port for communication with a USB device, such as
a host computer. For communication setup procedures, see Serial Communication Setup on page 2-44.
•
Charges the mobile computer’s battery, when used with the appropriate power supply.

NOTE When a mobile computer with Windows Mobile 5.0 is connected to a host computer through the MSR and
an ActiveSync connection is made, the WLAN and WWAN radios (if applicable) are disabled. This is a
Microsoft security feature to prevent connection to two networks at the same time.
