ExhaustAftertreatment
SelectiveCatalyticReductionSystem(IfEquipped)
Introduction
SelectiveCatalyticReduction(SCR)istheaftertreatment
technologythattreatsexhaustgasdownstreamoftheengine.
Itusesaurea-basedDieselExhaustFluid(DEF)andacatalyst
tosignicantlyreducenitrogenoxide(NOx)emissions.
DieselExhaustFluid
DieselExhaustFluid(DEF)isnontoxic,nonammable,and
biodegradable.Itisacarefullyblendedaqueousureasolution
of32.5%high-purityureaand67.5%deionizedwater.
Ifstoredbetween10°and90°F(-12°and32°C),DEFhasshelf
lifeof12monthsminimum.Forbestshelflife,DEFcontainers
shouldbestoredinacontrolledenvironmentoutofdirect
sunlight.
TheamountofDEFconsumptiondependsonenginespeed,
load,andaltitude;therefore,itdiffersfromvehicletovehicle.
CAUTION
Topreventpropertydamage,Navistar,Inc.
requirestheuseofDieselExhaustFluid(DEF)
thatmeetsorexceedsISO-22241-1.Thereisno
acceptablesubstitute.

®
brandDieselExhaust
Fluid.
DEFTank
TheDEFtankislocatedonthedriversideofthevehicle,forward
ofthefueltankandbehindthebatterybox.Forreference,see
sectionModelDescription>ExteriorComponents.
ThellerneckinletonaDEFtankhasabluecapandhasa
smallerdiameter(19mm)thanthatofallerneckonthediesel
fueltank.
TheSCRsystemisdesignedtooperatenormallyalsounder
freezingconditionswhilecontainingDEF.ThoughDEFfreezes
atapproximately10°F(-12°C),nooperatorinteractionis
necessarywhenoperatingincoldtemperatures.
Undercoldorverydryconditions,watervaporcanbeseen
comingfromthevehicletailpipe.Thisisnormalsystem
operation.Thewatervaporwilldisappearwithinafewminutes
ofnormalvehicleoperation.
