Topreventpropertydamage,personalinjury,
and/ordeath,iftheABSwarningindicator
comeson,havetheABSrepairedimmediatelyas
stoppingdistancesmayincreaseundercertain
brakingconditions.Takeeveryprecautionto
preventwheellockup,whichcouldresultinloss
ofvehiclecontrol.
ABSrequiresnochangesindrivingpractices.Forthebest
stoppingperformancewithorwithoutABS,modulate–do
notpump–thebrakepedaluntilthevehicleslowstodesired
speedorstops.BeawarethatABSonatowingvehicledoes
notcontrolbrakesontowedvehicles.T owedvehiclesmay
ormaynothaveABS.ABSwillpreventlockupofcontrolled
wheelsifyouover-brakeforexistingroadconditions.Optimum
vehiclecontrolforexistingroadconditionswillbeprovidedas
aresultoftheABSpreventingwheellockupatspeedsabove
approximately4milesperhour.TheABScannotprovideany
betterbrakingandsteeringcapabilitythantheavailableroad
tractionwillpermit.Iftheroadisslipperyitwilltakelonger
tostopthanonadryroad.Steeringmaneuverabilitywillbe
similarlylimited.Vehiclespeedmustbereducedtocompensate
fortheextendedtimeanddistancerequiredtostoporslowthe
vehicleonslipperyroads.
Thewheelhubscarryexciterringsusedbyaxlemounted
sensorstotransmitwheelspeedinformationtotheABS
electroniccontrolunitlocatedinsidethecab.Thecontrolunit
monitorsandcomparesallwheelspeedinputstodetermineif
anywheel(s)areabouttolock.Ifwheellockupisabouttooccur,
thecontrolunitcommandstheappropriatemodulatorvalveto
adjustairpressuredeliverytopreventwheellockup.

ABSCheckout:AYELLOWwarningindicatoron
theinstrumentpanelindicatestheantilocksystemstatus.The
indicatorcomesonandthesystemgoesthroughanABS
self-checkoutsequenceeachtimetheignitionisturnedon.
Thesystemisworkingnormallywhenignitionisturnedon,
indicatorcomeson,thenashestwiceandremainsonfor
severalsecondsbeforegoingout.
Duringtheself-checkout,themodulatorvalveswillcyclearound
thevehicletwiceinthefollowingpattern
1.RightFront
2.LeftFront
3.RightRear
4.LeftRear
AfaulthasbeendetectedintheABSifthewarningindicator
doesnotcomeonwithignition,doesnotash,failstogooff,or
comesonagainatanyothertime.
Ifover-brakingcauseswheellockuponthereardriveaxles
whileenginebrakingdevicesareinoperation,theABSwill
interruptanddisabletheenginebrakeuntilthelockupsituation
hasstopped.
IftheABSwarningindicatorontheinstrumentpanelislit,
consultyournearestInternationalTruckservicecenterfor
furtherassistanceinmaintainingandrepairingyourABS.
