Preservingproperinationpressureisaveryimportant
maintenancepracticetoensuresafevehicleoperationandlong
lifeforthetires.
Failuretomaintaincorrectinationpressuremayresultin
suddentiredestruction,impropervehiclehandling,andmay
causerapidandirregulartirewear.Therefore,ination
pressuresshouldbecheckeddailyandalwaysbefore
long-distancetrips.
Followthetiremanufacturer'srecommendedcoldination
pressureforthetiresize,type,loadrange(plyrating),andaxle
loadingtypicalforyouroperation.(Eachsteeraxletireloadwill
equal1/2steeraxleloading;eachdrivetireloadwillbe1/4the
axleloading,ifttedwithfourtires.)
CheckingInation
Alwayscheckinationpressurewhentiresarecold.Never
bleedairfromhottirestorelievenormalpressurebuildup.
Normalincreasesinpressureduringoperationwillbe10to
15psi(69-103kPa),whichisallowableintrucktires.Tires
onthesameaxleshouldhavethesameairpressureasthe
correspondingothertire(s)onthataxle.Steertiresshouldbe
withina3psi(21kPa)pressurerange.Alldrivetiresshouldbe
withina5psi(34kPa)pressurerange.T agorpusheraxletires
onthesameaxleshouldbewithina5psi(34kPa)pressure
range.
Tominimizerimcorrosion,itisparticularlyimportanttokeep
moisturefromtheinsideoftiresandproperselectionofair
compressorequipment,properairlinerouting,andtheuseof
shopairdryersisstronglyrecommendedtoavoidmoisturein
thehigh-pressureairusedfortireination.
Underination
Tiresshouldnotbeallowedtobecomeunderinated.Increased
exingduetounderinationcausesheatbuildupwithinthe
tirecomponents.Thisleadstoreducedstrength,breakdown
oftherubbercompoundsandpossibleseparationofthetire
components(suchasplyandtreadseparationandreduced
retreadability).
Underinationisalsotheprimarycauseofblowouts.Inaddition,
lowinationcausesanincreaseinrollingresistance.Thisresults
inreducedfuelmileage,alossintreadlife,andunevenwear
duetoincreasedtreadmovement.T odetermineproperination,
refertothetireinationrangestatedonthetiresidewallandthe
tiremanufacturer’stireload-pressurecharts.
