Ifribtireisusedonfrontaxleandlug-oroff-road-typeon
rearaxlepositions:
•Front(Steering)Axle-Replacetiresatfrontwheels
whentreadiswornto4/32inch(3mm)orless.
•RearAxles-Tiresmustberemovedwhenthetread
iswornto2/32inch(2mm)orless.Tiresidentied
withthewordregroovablemoldedonthesidewallcan
beregrooved.Aminimumof3/32inch(2.38mm)of
undertreadmustbeleftatthebottomofthegrooves.
WheelandTireBalancing
Out-of-roundorout-of-balancewheelsortirescancausevehicle
vibrationandbounce,andshimmy.Replacedamagedor
out-of-roundwheels.Out-of-roundtiresandwheelassemblies
canbecorrectedbyrecheckingthetirerelativetothewheel.
Thetireandwheelassemblyshouldthereafterbedynamically
balancedandreinspectedwhilespinningforanout-of-round
condition.
Wear
Radialtirescanexhibitthreetypesofnormalwearpatterns,
even,erosion,orchamfer.
EvenWearisasignthatthetireisbeingproperlyusedand
maintained.
ErosionWearhasalsobeencalledrollingwear,channel,or
riverwear.Erosionwearisfoundmoreoftenatfreerollingtires.
Thisisanindicationthatthetireisbeingusedinaslowwearing
operation.Whathappensisthatthebeltpliesareheldveryrigid
andthetreadisnotallowedtodistortasitpassesthroughthe
contactarea.Wearwillonlyoccurattheedgeofthetread.No
correctiveactionisrequired.Iferosiongetstobe1/16inch(2
mm)ormore,thetiremayberotatedtoadriveaxle.
ChamferorShoulderWear,withtiresinatedproperly,isa
normaltendencyofmostradialtiredesigns.Ifbothinsideand
outsideshouldersarewearingevenlyaroundthetire,nofurther
actionisrequired.Overinationisnoteffectiveincorrectingthis
effect.
IrregularWear
Ifirregularwearispresent,checktheaxlealignment,tire
pressure,wheelbalance,shockandsuspensioncomponent
condition,andwheelbearingendplay.
Thisconditionnotonlyshortenstirelife,butwilladverselyaffect
thehandlingofyourvehicle.
Rotatingtiresfromonewheelpositiontoanotherisawayoften
usedtoevenoutmanytypesofirregularwearortoavoidit
