Operation
ExhaustDieselParticulateFilterRegeneration
ThisvehicleisequippedwithaDieselParticulateFilter
(DPF)tomeet2010emissionsrequirements.TheDPFtraps
exhaustparticulatemattergeneratedbynormalengineusage.
Periodically,theenginecontrolsystemwillperforma“cleaning”
ofthelter,knownasNormalRegeneration.Thisprocessis
transparenttotheoperatorandoccursduringnormalvehicle
operation.
Insomecasestheenginecontrolsystemisunabletomanage
sootlevelsintheDPFthroughNormalRegeneration.When
thisoccurstheDPFindicatorwillilluminatesolidYELLOWon
theinstrumentpanelgaugeclusteradvisingthatactionmustbe
taken.Atthistimethevehicleshouldthenbedrivenathighway
speeds,orpulledovertoperformaParkedRegeneration(See
ParkedRegenerationProcedure).
Ifnoactionistakenduringthepreviouswarningstage,the
DPFindicatorwillbegintoashindicatingthatthelterisfull.
Thevehicleshouldthenbepulledsafelyofftheroadwayanda
ParkedRegenerationshouldbeperformed.
Ifthevehicleisdrivenbeyondtheinitialtwowarningstages,
alossofengineperformance(derate)willoccur.Ignoringthe
needforaParkedRegeneration,whenrequired,canresultina
warningforexcessiveexhausttemperatures,andarequirement
toshuttheengineoffandnotrestartituntiltheDPFhasbeen
servicedbyatechnician.ItisimportanttoperformaParked
Regenerationwhenrequired.Failuretodosocouldbemission
disablingandresultinthevehiclebeingtowed.

indicatorsandthecorrespondingproceduresthatmustbe
followed.
WARNING
Topreventpropertydamage,personalinjury,and
/ordeath,donotperformaParkedRegeneration
whenDieselParticulateFilter(DPF)indicatoris
ONasthiswillcausetheenginetolosepowerand
eventuallyshutdown.
WhenperformingParkedRegeneration,make
certainvehicleissafelyoffoftheroadway
andexhaustpipeisawayfrompeople,orany
ammablematerialsorstructures.
Failuretofollowtheseinstructionsmayresult
inalossofenginepowerandvehiclespeed,
increasedexhausttemperatures,andanaccident
orre.
Therewillbethreelevelsofindicationthatthevehicle’sexhaust
lterisaccumulatingsootandneedstobecleaned,eachwith
anincreasingurgencyforaction.
NOTE:ALevel1indicationmaydisappearoraLevel2may
reverttoaLevel1,ifthevehicleisdrivenonhighwayat
highwayspeedsforanextendedperiod.Thisprocessof
autoregenerationoftheexhaustlterisactivatedwhen
theengineloadisincreasedasaresultofhighwaydriving
athighwayspeeds.IftheDPFindicatordoesnotreduce
inlevelordisappear,aParkedRegenerationmustbe
performed.
