TowingVehicleWithFrontWheelsSuspended
CAUTION
Topreventtransmissiondamage,vehicles
shouldnotbetowedevenshortdistanceswithout
suspendingrearwheelsorremovingtheaxle
shaftsorpropellershaft.
Intheeventthechassisisequippedwithtandem
axlesandthevehicleistobetowedfromthe
front,theforwardrearaxlemayberaisedto
cleartheroadsurfaceandsecuredtotheframe
bychainsorU-bolts,allowingonlyrearaxle
tocontactroadsurface.Axleshaftsmustbe
removedfromrearaxleassembly.Thewheelhub
endsmustbecoveredtopreventlossofaxle
lubricantandentranceofcontaminants.Use
extremecareinsecuringthechainsorU-boltsto
preventpossibledamageofbrakelines,hoses
orothercomponents.
Whenitisnecessarytotowavehiclewiththefrontwheels
suspended,extraprecautionsmustbetakentoavoid
transmissionordifferentialdamage.Proceedasfollows.
Removeaxleshaftsfromaxleassemblytopreventthewheels
fromdrivingthedifferentialandthetransmission.Thewheel
hubendsmustbecoveredtopreventlossofaxlelubricant
andentranceofcontaminants.Ifaxleshaftsarenotremoved,
removalofpropellershaftsatrearaxlewillberequired.

CAUTION
Topreventdifferentialand/ortransmission
damage,vehiclesthatmustbetowedtoaservice
facilitywiththedriveaxlewheelsontheground,
itisnecessarytoremovetheaxleshaftsbefore
thevehicleistowed.
CAUTION
Topreventpropertydamage,donotuseachisel
orwedgetoloosenaxleshaftsanddowels.The
chiselorwedgecandamagehub,axleshaftsand
oilsealsifused.
NOTE:Onvehiclesequippedwithadrivercontrolled
differentiallock,beforeairpressureislostthedifferential
lockmustbemanuallycagedpriortoremovingtheaxle
shaft.Failuretodosomaymakereinstallationoftheaxle
shaftextremelydifcultandtimeconsuming.
NOTE:Oneoftheaxleshaftshastwosetsofsplines–
onesettoengagewithdifferentialsidegearandonesetto
engagewithshiftcollarforthedifferentiallock.Itmaybe
necessarytorotateshaftslightlytoalignsidegearspline
teethwithclutchcollarteethinordertoremoveaxleshaft.
