Atleastonceayear,theentirebrakesystemmustbeinspected
byatrainedmechanic.Deterioratedcomponentsorcomponents
wornoutsideofspecicationsmustbereplaced.Check:
1.Rubbercomponentsforcondition,cracks,tears,wear,
missingcomponents,etc.
2.Conditionofdrums,brakechambers,andslack
adjustersforwear,corrosion,maladjustment,cracks,
missingcomponents,etc.
3.Forairleaks.Noairleakageispermissible.Also,
checkforairleakswithparkingbrakedisengagedand
wheelsblocked.
4.Hoseorpipesforrust,damage,deterioration.
5.Properoperationofservice,parking,andtrailerbrake
controls.
6.TheconditionandfullinsertionoftheABSwheelspeed
sensors,wiring,andconnectors.
7.ProperABSwheelspeedsensor-to-exciterteethgap.

NOTE:Theuseofanairdryerdoesnoteliminatetheneed
toperiodicallydraintheairtanks.
Theairdryerremoveshumidity(water),aircompressoroil,and
dirtfromtheincomingcompressedair,thusprotectingtheair
systemagainstdeteriorationandrestriction.
Theairdryerisinstalledbetweentheaircompressordischarge
lineandtheairtanks.Theairdryerhasadesiccantcartridge
andalterwhichisservicedasanassembly.Moisturefromthe
aircollectsonthedesiccantandisautomaticallydischarged.
Lifeandperformanceoftheairdryerdependsonusage,air
humiditylevels,environmentaltemperatures,aircompressoroil
control,anddesiccantquantity.Regularlycheckthedesiccant,
purgevalve,andairdryerheaterperformance.
DesiccantFilter
Openreservoirdrainvalvesandcheckforpresenceofwater.
Smallamountsofwaterduetocondensationarenormal.Ifthe
wet,primary,orsecondarytanksarecollectinganabnormally
highamountofwaterbetweenregularairtankdrainintervals,
replacetheairdryerdesiccant.
Theairdryerdesiccantreplacementintervalmayvary;itis
generallyrecommendedthatthedesiccantbereplacedevery

.Ifexperiencehasshownthatextendedorshortenedlife
hasresultedforaparticularinstallation,thentheintervalshould
beincreasedorreducedaccordingly.
PurgeValve
Checkthatthepurgevalveopensandexpelsmoisturewhen
theairgovernorshutsofftheaircompressor.Airshouldescape
rapidlyandthenquicklystop.Ifthepurgevalvedoesnotopen
oryoucanhearaslightaudibleairleakagepastthevalvefor
longerthan30seconds,thevalvemaybestickingandshould
