and/ordeath,BrakeAutomaticSlackAdjusters
(ASAs)shouldnotneedtobemanuallyadjusted
inservice.ASAsshouldnotroutinelyhave
tobeadjustedtocorrectexcessivepushrod
stroke.Excessivestrokeindicatesthataproblem
existswiththefoundationbrake,ASA,brake
actuator,otherbrakesystemcomponents,or
theirinstallationoradjustment.
Intheeventthatamanualadjustmentmustbe
made(althoughthisshouldnotbeacommon
practice),aserviceappointmentandfull
foundationbrake,ASA,andotherbrakesystem
componentinspectionmustbeconductedas
soonaspossibletoensuretheintegrityofthe
overallbrakesystempriortoreturningthevehicle
toservice.
Aregularscheduleforperiodiccleaning,lubrication,adjustment
andinspectionshouldbeestablished,basedonthetype
ofvehicleoperation.Itisdifculttopredetermineanexact
maintenanceinterval(timeormileage),sincevehicleswillbe
usedinawidevarietyofapplicationsandconditions.Ifyou
areuncertainoftheproperscheduleandproceduresforyour
vehicle,contactyourInternationaldealer.
Periodiccheckingofpushrodtravelorbrakeadjustmentis
essentialforgoodbraking.Pushrodtravelshouldbechecked
everyserviceintervaltodetermineifadjustmentisnecessary.
Brakechamberpushrodsonoriginalequipmentchambersnow
incorporateanoverstrokeindicator(anorangepaintmarker
nearthebaseofthepushrod)toaidadjustmentchecks.Ifthe
pushrodiscleanandtheorangemarkercanbeseenprotruding
fromthechamberwhenthebrakesareapplied,thebrakes
requireadjustment.
Slackadjustersshouldalsobecheckedtoensureproper
operationoftheadjustermechanismateveryinterval.Pushrod
travelshouldbelessthanthemaximumallowedstrokewithout
brakesdragging.
Inspectbrakeliningseverymaintenanceinterval.Whenbrake
shoes(orpads)areworntowithin1/16inch(1.6mm)ofrivets
(orbackingplates),asindicatedbyalineorotherfeatureonthe
edgeofmostbrakeshoes(orpads),brakeshoes(orpads)must
bereplaced.
Thisinspectionoradjustmentshouldonlybeperformedby
qualiedservicepersonnelandmustbeinaccordancewith
instructionsprovidedbytheServiceManual.
NOTE:Donotoverlookthebrakesonthetrailereither.
Brakeconditiononatrailerisjustasimportantasthe
tractor.Properbrakebalanceontrucksandtractortrailers
isessentialforgoodbraking.
