218 NEO Concepts and Terminology
Exclusive Groups
To ensure that only one effect operates within a specified group, exclusive groups can be created. We may have a
number of effects for the same group of lights where it makes no sense to run any more than one effect at a time. If we
did, the effects would conflict and cause undesirable results.
By placing an effect into an exclusive group, it will stop all other grouped effects when you attempt to start it.
7. Command Line Interface
NEO comes equipped with a Command Line interface. This is similar to traditional theatrical lighting consoles and
allows the programmer to type commands directly to the system bypassing the graphical interface.
It can be advantageous to do this if a quick change is required and the programmer is familiar with the required
commands. The Command Line interface can be accessed via the primary monitor's window.
Command History
The command history allows the viewing of past commands made via the Command Line interface. This can be
handy when something unexpected has happened and the programmer needs to check exactly what commands were
sent to the dimmers.
8. Telnet Interface
Telnet allows a programmer to connect to NEO remotely using a hand-held device or similar. Commands can be sent
from the remote device using the command language used by the Command Line interface.
The freedom of remote access to the NEO software means that the programmer/operator can be almost anywhere
while setting up the lighting fixtures and make changes without needing to reside at the NEO itself.
9. Palettes
Palettes are a way to configure a particular look that you may want to recall quickly and without executing several
commands to the system. A palette may put a fixture into a specific position or setup a number of fixtures into a
specific color.
NEO allows palettes to be assigned to a specific list of fixtures or operate on currently selected fixtures.
10. Macros
Macros are simple programs made up of a sequence of commands. If a particular sequence of commands is used
frequently, it makes sense to create a macro for them. This means that rather than re-typing the commands every time,
the macro can be run instead, automatically executing the commands.
This saves time as well as reducing the chance of errors being made.
11. Modes
Active selection mode - Turn on the active selection option for channels/fixtures and they will automatically go to
the ON level whenever selected. The fixtures will also turn OFF if the fixture is unselected. When active selection
mode is enabled the on screen "Select Active" button will highlight in red as a warning and the Active Select Mode
button will be backlit in red. This is a great tool for a channel check. Turn Active Select Mode on, select channel 1,
then Next/Last to move up and down the channel list.
Inclusive Mode - If the "inclusive selection" option is active then each selection made will be added to the previous
selection. All channels currently selected will remain selected unless they are in the new selection area. Any selection
will toggle the selection state of a channel. When Inclusive Mode is enabled, the on screen "
If this option is not active then each selection made will unselect any currently selected channels. If the selection
overlaps any currently selected channels then they will remain selected. If you hold down the control (ctrl) key while
making selection in this mode you are able to add channels as per the exclusive mode.
Highlight selection mode - This is toggle option that will have a small check mark next to it when turned on. Turn on
the highlight selection option for channels and fixtures to automatically go to the highlight state whenever selected.
