4 Importance of Testing Fiber
4.4 Fiber Properties that Influence
Yarn Strength
Research has concluded that there is a relationship between fiber
properties and yarn properties. For this reason the testing of raw fiber
properties is important to the cotton spinning mill to predetermine yarn
strength and spinning production. Research conducted by Cotton
Incorporated (USA) and Uster Technologies indicates the influence of
HVI measured fiber properties on yarn strength. When spinning a Ne
26, one can see that length, length uniformity, strength, and micronaire
predict over 75% of possible variation in yarn strength. It is evident that
length combined with length uniformity account for between 30 to 44%
of the variation in yarn strength in both rotor and ring spun yarns. The
unexplained 12 to 13% portion is variation resulting from the process or
the measurement of other fiber properties not yet measured.
