Conveyor Operations (Continued)
B. Stop Pins/Clamp Bars
1. Stop pins and clamp bars are used to index parts in the dispensing area and
hold them in place during dispensing procedures.
2. Optical sensors determine the board’s presence and mechanical pins stop the
board in the correct position.
3. Lift tables are installed on systems equipped with contact heaters and raise
to hold the part in place during dispensing.
4. Systems with impingement heaters have clamp bars to hold the part in place
during dispensing.
C. SMEMA Communication
1. SMEMA (Surface Mount Equipment Manufacturers Association) is an
established protocol for signal communication between two or more different
systems.
2. SMEMA handshaking is an exchange of input and output signals between two
systems.
An upstream machine is a machine such as a loader.
A downstream machine is a machine such as an unloader.
D. Detailed Operation
1. A workpiece enters the Axiom X-1020 Dispensing System.
The dispensing system communicates with the upstream machine via the
SMEMA connection signaling that it is ready to accept a workpiece.
The upstream machine receives the signal as an input.
If the upstream machine is ready to send a workpiece, it responds with an
output signal back to the dispensing system.
The dispensing system receives the signal from the upstream machine as
an input.
The Conveyor Controller determines if the pairs of inputs and outputs
indicate that the workpiece can be conveyed into the dispensing chamber.
If the dispensing process requires the workpiece to be preheated, the
workpiece is conveyed to the Pre-dispense Station, go to Step 2.
If the dispensing process does not require queuing or preheating, the
workpiece is conveyed directly to the Dispense Station, skip to Step 4.
