LAN SERVICES
INTRODUCTION
Corporate internal networks – or local area networks (LANs) – are made up of different elements, or
"host names", such as servers, client stations, routers, hubs, and so on. To be effectively integrated into
a LAN, these devices are subject to integration rules that govern the definition of an IP address plan,
the adoption of domain names and naming conventions, etc. OmniPCX provides features that facili-
tate integration into a LAN, whatever topology it may present. These features correspond to DNS and
DHCP services. What follows is a general description of how these services work, before dealing with
their configuration in OmniPCX.
DESCRIPTION
DHCP SERVER
The protocol usually implemented and run on LANs is TCP/IP, the standard protocol used on the In-
ternet. In TCP/IP, each host name belonging to a network (LAN, WAN) has its own unique IP address
enabling it to be recognized or called up by the other host names when they need to communicate
with each other.
