PROXY
INTRODUCTION
A proxy server is an application that gathers requests from client stations and passes them on to a re-
mote server. The remote server's response is then relayed back to the local PCs. Because these servers
handle communications, they are in a position to provide a number of services:
- they can record everything they do, with a view to compiling statistics on user access.
- they can filter access on the basis of the content of requested URLs.
- they can filter previously connected users.
- Proxy servers can also handle caching: i.e. storing the most recently downloaded or used files on
a local disk for easier availability. This means a file need only be downloaded once from a web
site, and can then be transferred locally at much greater speed in response to identical requests.
The main advantage lies in reducing traffic to and from the Internet, and therefore the connection
costs incurred by Alcatel OmniPCX.
Remarque : Where the proxy license is available, the web access (HTTP, HTTPS and Gopher) and file
transfer (FTP) services are obliged to go through the proxy.
Description
Alcatel OmniPCX includes a HTTP and FTP proxy server with all the features described in the introduc-
tion.
- User control
Prior to each Internet connection, the user is asked for an account identifier and password; the ac-
count is associated with certain web access rights (see User Management). If user control is active,
then accounts without the necessary rights will be rejected. An Internet navigation session is defined
by the launch of a browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator), access to one or more web
sites, and the closure of the browser. In sessions like these, the user account and password will be
requested when the first web site is accessed.
- URL control
If URL control is active, there are two alternatives:
• Authorizing access to one or more sites specified in a list, and to no others. If the list is empty,
then Internet navigation (http) and file transfers (ftp) will be impossible.
- Blacklisting certain URLs by indicating, for each list entry, either a complete name or a character
