Configuring Load Balancing for an E-
commerce Site
The following example shows how a Firebox Vclass appli-
ance can function as a load balancing accessory to evenly
distribute data requests to a series of Web servers. This sce-
nario can be adapted to full effect in e-commerce sites that
use a large number of servers to manage the growing num-
ber of consumers.
An e-commerce site may get several hundred thousand
hits a day. A Firebox Vclass appliance can be strategically
placed in the network to function as both a firewall that
protects internal network assets and a load balancer for the
Web servers.
In this scenario, any number of external client users will be
trying to connect to a Web site with a URL that points
solely to a single, publicly routable IP address, 128.100.0.2.
This address cannot be shared by all the existing Web serv-
ers, each of which has its own internal IP address. The
