Chapter 1 Before Use
HA-8190V 1-2
1.1 Overview
1.1.1 Main Functions
The HA-8190V measures HbA1c glycated hemoglobin and provides information necessary for controlling blood
glucose in diabetics. It can measure HbA1c (stable HbA1c) and HbF. Measurements made with the HA-8190V are
accurate because labile HbA1c (L-A1c), carbamylated Hb and acetylated Hb are eluted separately from stable HbA1c
peak.
Sample measurement
The instrument can measure hemolysis samples that have been diluted with DILUENT90 as well as whole blood
samples.
Two measurement modes, Variant and Fast: In addition to measuring HbA1c and HbF, this instrument can
separate variant Hb (HbS and HbC) and detect HbE and HbD in the Variant mode. (When HbE or HbD are
detected, the HbA1c values should be considered as an estimated value because HbE and HbD are not completely
separated.) If variant Hb separation and HbE and HbD detection are unnecessary, setting the Fast mode shortens
measurement time. The measurement mode can be changed for each sample by command from the host computer.
Sample measurements can be performed in the following two ways:
Normal measurement
Normal measurement continuously measures multiple samples using sample racks. One sample rack can hold up to
10 samples. Load the sample racks with samples onto the sampler and press . The instrument then automatically
moves the racks and measures the samples sequentially.
For anemia sample: A special rack is supplied to measure whole blood samples from patients previously
diagnosed as anemic, or to remeasure samples that produced abnormal measurement results with a displayed
message “Hb low value”. Samples on the anemia rack are measured at a lower dilution ratio than samples on the
normal racks. However, A1c values may not accurately represent the mean blood sugar level over the past 2 or
3 months, if the patient shows signs of anemia because blood corpuscles are short-lived. Therefore, base any
diabetes determination on a comprehensive diagnosis of blood sugar level and other factors.
STAT measurement
You can measure a single sample by setting it in the STAT port. This allows you to interrupt normal measurement in
an emergency to perform a measurement.
HbA1c control measurement
Control measurements should be carried out at regular intervals to check the accuracy of measurement results. Use
commercially available controls that are specified by your distributor.
HbA1c calibration
Periodically calibrating the instrument can eliminate measurement errors caused by changes in environmental
conditions. Calibration can be performed in the following two ways:
Automatic calibration
Calibration coefficients (operation coefficients) for correcting measurement results are automatically calculated by
measuring two standard solutions.
