SECTION 58 - ATTACHMENTS / HEADERS - CHAPTER 2
58-2
BEVEL GEARBOX - REMOVAL
WARNING
Disengage the PTO, turn off the tractor engine
and remove the key. Wait for all movement to
stop before leaving operator’s position. Never
adjust, lubricate, clean or unplug machine with
the engine running. Failure to comply could
result in death or serious injury.
Raise the header and engage the transport locks
prior to removal of the bevel drive gearbox.
1. Drain the oil from the bevel gearbox while it is still
on the machine. To drain the oil, remove the drain
plug at 1.
NOTE: The oil may drain faster if the fill plug is also
removed.

2. Open the left side shield by unhooking the rubber
straps, lifting shield and swinging it open.
NOTE: It may be more convenient to remove the left
end shield for better access. To remove the shield,
remove the two cap screws and lock nuts at 1, and
lift off the shield.
3. If necessary, unhook the anti-rotation chain, 2,
for the secondary drive shaft from the slot in the
shielding.

4. Remove the two clamping bolts, 1, and locknuts
from the rear of the slip clutch assembly. Loosen
the cap screw, 2, and lock washer inside the slip
clutch yoke, but do not remove it. Tap the rear of
the clutch housing with a soft faced hammer to
remove it from the taper on the gearbox shaft; the
center retaining bolt will prevent the clutch from
falling off the shaft.
5. Remove the center retaining bolt, 3, and slide the
clutch assembly off of the gearbox input shaft.
IMPORTANT: The slip clutch end of the secondary
PTO shaft is very heavy and awkward; use caution
not to drop the shaft assembly as personal injury or
damage to the CV joint may result.
