BEVEL GEARBOX - REASSEMBLY
During assembly of the bevel gearbox, it is important
to be aware that all bearings, except for the bottom
bearing, 1, Figure 15, on the cutter bar drive shaft,
consists of carefully manufactured cups and cones to
provide a specific stack height,” or combined
thickness. These low tolerance bearings, in
conjunction with precision machining of the gearbox
housings and the use of precision forged gears, have
eliminated the need for backlash adjustments during
the repair of the gearbox. The backlash between the
gearsets, 2, Figure 15, should be 0.127 -- 0.381 mm
(0.005 -- 0.015 in) after the gearbox has been
assembled.
If the backlash is found to be incorrect after gearbox
repair with new parts, recheck the gearbox for correct
assembly of all components.
NOTE: The low tolerance bearings are manufac-
tured for a specific “stack height”. Do not mix old and
new bearing components or substitute with jobber”
bearings.
1. Install new bearing cups into the conditioner
drive housing.
NOTE: Do not mix old and new bearing components;
always replace both cups and cones.
2. Pack a new bearing cone with grease, and press
it onto the conditioner drive shaft.
NOTE: The outer bearing cone, 3, Figure 15, on the
conditioner drive shaft must be packed with grease
to ensure it is lubricated during startup, as oil must
flow through the inner bearing to get to the outer
bearing. Lubricate all other bearing cones with oil
during assembly to ensure accurate rolling torque
measurements.
3. Insert the shaft assembly through the conditioner
drive housing, and slide on a new bearing cone
and 24T gear; oil bearing cone prior to
installation. Press the gear and bearing on until
the bearing is almost seated.
