Ping
The “ping” command is used to test a connection in the Ethernet
1)
. In this, a data package is sent to a
target address and, if the connection was successful, sent back.
If a logical participant name is entered instead of the IP address, the DNS server will first replace the
participant's name with its IP address and then the data package will be sent.
After you have entered an IP address/name, click the Test button in the Ping section.
The test is logged in the diagnosis field and the result is output. A ping test error, if using an entered IP
address, is usually caused by the following:
No (electric) connection to the Ethernet (check cable).
No participant with the entered IP address within the access range of the connected Ethernet (check
IP address).
Wrong subnet mask for one's own domain (see page 251).
Hardware fault.
Domain Name Server
(DNS)
DNS server availability and the address resolution for a logical participant name can be checked with this
test function:
After you have entered a name, click the Test button in the Domain Name Server (DNS) window.
The following responses are possible:
The computer name 'xxxx' could be resolved by the DNS as the numerical IP address
'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx'.
The computer name 'xxxx' could not be resolved by the DNS.
Although the DNS server was found, there is no entry for the name. Check the name or inform
your network administrator.
The DNS server 'xxxx' does not respond.
The DNS server, which was input in the Ethernet configuration, was not found.
1) Ping is derived from ping pong: A data package is sent and then returned by the receiver.
